In 2000, the Phoenix Fire Department (PFD) switched from Suburbans to Ford F-250 pick-ups for our command vehicles. The F-250 is a heavier diesel vehicle with improved A/C, two-wheel drive and turnouts outside of the vehicle.
The IC remains in the front of the vehicle because this is a quiet, isolated, controlled environment. It also offers better radios, computer access and lighting. The IC’s driver works as the support officer, and there’s room for a senior advisor in the rear seat.
All command vehicles are equipped with a computer that includes mapping functions, preplans, a resource list, dispatch updates and tracking/unit location (AVL) capabilities. Also included in this area are four portable radios, one rig radio, cell phones and the MDT (computer system).
