Build Your Skills
The IAFC’s Company Officer Leadership Symposium provides targeted education to help you succeed
By Timothy Sendelbach FireRescue Editor-in-Chief
Serving as a company officer isn’t easy. You must master technical skills well enough to train others as well as stay up-to-date on tactics and technology. But one of the hardest aspects of managing an incident is managing your people. Firefighters on your crew are looking to you for mentorship and career development—and you may be looking around for the same.
Education plays a vital role in bridging this gap. The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) has put together an excellent program for company officers at its Fire-Rescue International (FRI) conference in Denver in August. In fact, I signed on to be an instructor in the program because I firmly believe that targeted company officer instruction is needed in the fire service and that all company officers, regardless of where they stand in their careers, will benefit from this symposium.
FireRescue will also be presenting our prestigious Company Officer of the Year Award at the Educational Keynote Address at FRI, which you won’t want to miss.
Classes address fireground tactics and strategy, resolving conflict, diversity, ethics, leadership and mentorship skills and much more. And your Company Officer Leadership Symposium registration grants you access to other FRI sessions and the exhibit floor, where you can research products and gather the information needed to inform department purchasing-decisions.
