Story & Photos by Dennis Walus

Fire photosThe Englewood Fire Alarm Office (EFAO) dispatched a still alarm and box fire to a residence Sunday, Jan. 21, in a residential Chicago neighborhood. Multiple calls later reported people trapped in the building.

Upon arrival, engine Company 116 attempted to search and members Squad Company No. 5 rescued a 2-year-old child from the structure. Another family member was able to exit the building but sustained injuries. Ten other members of the family were able exit the building safely.

The Chicago Fire Department (CFD) transported the two rescued family members to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Offensive attack on the fire was terminated and the CFD began a defensive attack. The fire was brought under control in an hour and a half.

The cause of the fire was determined to be careless use of a space heater, and the structure was a total loss.
