Dear FireRescue Reader,
As the first month of the New Year winds to a close, 2008 is really here—and the public has never expected more of its first responders.
In this second installment of the e-Newsletter, Bob Vaccaro reports on American Lafrance's bankruptcy filing and Harold Schapelhouman discusses the fallout, both environmental and political, from the oil spill last November in the San Francisco Bay, as well as the role of the fire service in mitigating environmental disasters. Also, we hear from Scott Cook on establishing SOPs, revisit the collapse of the Minneapolis I-35W bridge, get company officer advice from Mike Dugan, take a look at a house fire in Detroit, and much more.
So once again and finally: Happy New Year! Now get training!
Sincerely,
The FireRescue Team |

Inside the Apparatus Industry
American LaFrance (ALF) has been building fire apparatus since its founding in 1832. It has also had a tumultuous past, having survived several ownership changes. Through it all, the company has always managed to overcome diversity and come out on top.
There’s no reason to believe this time around will be any different. As we all know by now, this week, ALF declared a voluntary bankruptcy… more »

By Scott Cook |
First, let me say “Greetings from Granbury” to all of you. And thanks for the many e-mails I received from you while I was not writing regularly. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and feelings with me, both those who said, “If you’re ever up my way, look me up,” and the ones who said, “If I ever see you in my city I’ll kick your … more »

As a new firefighter, I loved seeing certain officers at the firehouse when I showed up to work. One such person was my first captain, Danny Marshall. Working with him, I knew we would drill, he would teach me something new and I would be safe. He was a mentor, teacher and leader …

Inside the Collapse
2 on-scene chiefs share their perspective of the I-35 bridge collapse
By Shannon Pieper
Editor’s Note:
On Jan. 15, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced that gusset plates—plates that bind steel beams—were the cause of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis last summer. Plates that should have been 1-inch-thick were only 1/2-inch thick and failed in 8 of 122 instances. The collapse killed 13 people and injured 145. The NTSP estimates that as many as 12,600 bridges nationwide could suffer from a similar vulnerability ...
