Rural Arizona extends water supply through CAFS technology
Adequate water supply in rural areas is challenging. Fortunately, for the Summit Fire Department (SFD) in central Arizona, conservative, effective use of water mixed with compressed air foam extends the water supply when knocking down rural and wildland flames. Through the use of hands-on CAFS orientation and product education, the SFD has embraced the new CAFS technology while still upholding the traditional value of using water to fight fires.
The SFD recently organized and participated in classroom and hands-on product orientation courses paired with educational demonstrations taught by seasoned firefighters and factory-trained Waterous representatives. The courses included orientation and hands-on CAFSystemTM demonstrations used in live fire situations.
Participants discovered how compressed air foam knocks down fire at a much quicker rate, because the water is used more efficiently, which is essential in rural areas.
“We’re still using water, but we’re making that water work better,” Chief Don Howard said. “Efficient water use is important in rural areas and wildlands where hydrants aren’t readily available. By using compressed air foam we’re really extending our water supply.”
