Wanted: Outstanding Officers—nominate your company officer for FireRescue’s prestigious award
It’s not too late to submit a nomination for FireRescue’s 2008 Company Officer of the Year award!
A company officer’s leadership, commitment and skill greatly impact how a department serves its community, yet this vital role is often overlooked—within individual fire departments and the fire service as a whole.
Each year, FireRescue magazine demonstrates its commitment to company officer development and recognition through the Company Officer of the Year Award, which honors company officers with excellent leadership skills, tactical knowledge and community involvement. The winner will receive a $1,000 cash award, complimentary registration and travel to the IAFC’s Company Officer Symposium at Fire-Rescue International in Denver, where the award will be presented.
Eligibility: This award is open to active lieutenants, captains, first-line supervisors and company officers in both career and volunteer agencies. The winner will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Leadership: Nominees should lead their companies through example, inspiration and dedication.
- Training: Nominees should be innovative, diligent company officers who make training, education and preparedness a priority.
- Incident Command Effectiveness: Nominees should exhibit smart, effective and safe on-scene strategies at all incidents, no matter their size or scope.
- Commitment to Safety: Nominees will insist upon safe practices at all times, whether in the station, during training, traveling to an incident or on scene.
- Interpersonal Communication: Nominees should exhibit strong interpersonal communication skills with their companies, commanders, public officials and community members.
- Community Involvement: The best company officers keep their customers in mind. Nominees should be involved in their communities through fire-safety campaigns or other programs.
Selection process: Representatives from FireRescue magazine and the IAFC will judge the entrants.
Nomination: Please submit the following with your nomination:
- Primary contact information (name, title, agency, address, phone, fax, e-mail, etc.) for the person nominating.
- Secondary contact information.
- Nominee information (name, title, agency, address, phone, fax, e-mail, etc.).
- A 500-word description that explains the nominee’s qualities, extraordinary achievements, unique leadership skills and innovative programs/practices. When possible, use specific examples and address as many of the award criteria as possible. Achievements from the past 2 years are weighted more heavily than achievements earlier in the nominee’s career.
- Note: We encourage you to incorporate in your nomination the endorsement of the department chief and/or the nominee’s immediate supervisor.
Deadline and submission information: Nominations are due June 2, 2008 and should be submitted to:
