FireRescue Magazine (FRM), an award-winning publication published by Elsevier Public Safety, is a leading voice in editorial coverage of the fire and rescue markets. Our "Read It Today, Use It Tomorrow" mission weaves through every article and image we publish. Our 55,000 readers consist of fire chiefs, company officers, training officers, firefighters, and technical rescue personnel.
Stories we publish We publish hands-on, how-to articles that serve our "Read It Today, Use It Tomorrow" mission. Our readers desire articles they can take to the training field and practice with. We use lots of photos to illustrate our articles. We expect our authors to provide photographs or, at the least, to give specific direction on what photos should accompany their articles. Story examples:
- How to lift the dash during an extrication; how to use large-diameter hose; how to create better scene lighting.
- Spec check: a detailed profile of the specs on a newly delivered fire apparatus. Include such specifics as equipment lists.
Story length: 1,000 words.
- Ride-alongs: a profile of a unique department or rescue team. Story length: 1,000-1,500 words.
- Incident reviews: a challenging fire or rescue incident. Include a list of lessons learned with standard operating procedures the involved department(s) follow. Story length: 1,500 words.
- Product reviews: new technology and equipment write-ups. Tell us why the product is valuable to FRM readers, where it can be purchased, what it costs, etc. Story length varies.
How to Submit Your Story Idea
All story ideas must be submitted with a cover letter that outlines your qualifications and includes your name, full address, phone, fax, social security or tax ID number, and e-mail address. We accept story submissions in one of the following two formats: query letters and manuscripts.
One-page query letter. This is a brief outline of the story you intend to write. It should tell us:
- What specifically are you going to tell FRM readers?
- Why do FRM readers need to know this?
Manuscripts. We prefer to discuss content and related issues before you submit a completed manuscript. However, on occasion we accept manuscripts–pending rewrites and other editorial changes. Again, when submitting a manuscript ensure your cover letter includes the following:
- What specifically are you going to tell FRM readers?
- Why do FRM readers need to know this?
We don’t read manuscripts unless they are: 1. Typed and double-spaced with one-inch margins; 2. Submitted on 3.5-inch disk or via e-mail; 3. Created in Microsoft Word or a comparable word-processing program.
