FireRescue Magazine (FRM), an award-winning publication published by Elsevier Public Safety, is a leading voice in editorial coverage of the fire and rescue markets. Our "Read It Today, Use It Tomorrow" mission weaves through every article and image we publish. Our 55,000 readers consist of fire chiefs, company officers, training officers, firefighters, and technical rescue personnel.
What qualities does FRM look for in a good image?
We look for sharp, well-framed images with room around the frame edges to crop. For photographers who regularly respond to fire/rescue calls, we encourage shooting the scene from as many different angles as possible, concentrating on both the action and the smaller details. When possible, please shoot and submit vertical and horizontal formats of the same scene. We prefer photos that show rescuers, firefighters and emergency personnel in action, handling equipment, performing fire- or rescue-related tasks, or interacting with victims. Please include captions with each image that indicate response organizations pictured, city, state, and type of incident.
For FRM cover photographs, we look for action-oriented, dramatic, sharp photos in a vertical format. The photos should be stand-alone in that they tell a story or elicit an emotional response just by viewing the picture. The topics can include fires (rural or urban, with volunteer or paid firefighters), various types of rescues, and vehicle extrications.
What image format should I send to FRM?
We accept the following formats:
- 35mm color slides
- Prints: glossy color and B/W accepted
- Digital images in jpg, tiff, or eps format at 72 dpi for initial review. We require 300 dpi resolution for publication. If you send images as attachments via e-mail, compress your files with Stuffit, Disk Doubler, etc. Send only one attached image per e-mail.
Please note: Don’t send negatives. We accept no responsibility for unsolicited images. Please provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you want your images returned to you. Complete model release forms must accompany photos when legally appropriate.
Editors’ tips for getting published
- Study published samples before submitting.
- Don’t send long-distance or out-of-focus images.
- Focus directly on the firefighters or rescue workers in your shots. If an image shows a bunch of people’s backs as they bend over a trench or victim, we won’t publish it. Mangled metal shots are equally unwelcome.
- We do not want staged situations–only real-life fire/rescue action shots.
- Complete model release forms must accompany images when legally appropriate.
Where do I send my image(s)?
Send only duplicate–not original–copies of slides or glossy prints to FRM Managing Editor, 525 B Street, Suite 1900, San Diego, CA 92101.
We accept no responsibility for unsolicited materials.
What happens if FRM accepts my photograph?
Upon acceptance of your image(s), our art director or editor will notify you of our desire to use your image(s). Thereafter, we’ll send you a confirmation letter that outlines specifics of the image(s) to be used, payment information, and copyright information.
